Excellence
How Cafe Rio Began
Cafe Rio opened its doors in 2012 on University Avenue in Berkeley, CA — a single room, a handful of recipes, and an unshakeable belief that great food has the power to bring people together. Founders Marco and Elena Rivera had spent years traveling across Latin America and the American Southwest, absorbing the bold spices, fresh produce, and communal spirit of street-side kitchens.
What started as a weekend pop-up quickly became a neighborhood staple. Locals would queue down the block for our signature slow-cooked burritos and hand-crafted salsas. Within eighteen months we moved into our permanent home, expanded the kitchen, and brought in a team that shared our obsession with quality and hospitality.
Today, caferio serves hundreds of guests daily, offers catering for corporate events and celebrations, and delivers across the greater Berkeley area — but the soul of the place remains exactly what it was on day one: honest, craveable food made with pride.
What Drives Everything We Do
Four pillars guide every decision we make — from sourcing ingredients to training our staff.
Fresh Sourcing
We partner with local California farms to source the freshest seasonal produce, proteins, and dairy — delivered every morning before service begins.
Bold Flavors
Our chefs balance spice, acid, sweetness, and umami in every recipe. We never settle for bland — every bite should leave an impression.
Community First
Cafe Rio donates a portion of weekly revenue to Berkeley food-security programs and hosts monthly community dinners for local families.
Sustainable Ops
From compostable packaging to zero-food-waste kitchen practices, we work hard to make sure delicious food doesn't cost the planet.
The Principles Behind the Plate
Uncompromising Quality
We taste every batch, every sauce, every special before it leaves the kitchen. If it's not restaurant-worthy, it doesn't reach your table.
Genuine Hospitality
We treat every guest like a neighbor — warm, attentive, and eager to make your experience memorable from first greeting to last bite.
Respect for Ingredients
Seasonal, locally sourced, and treated with care — we let great ingredients shine rather than masking them with shortcuts.
Constant Innovation
Our menu rotates with the seasons and evolves with our guests' palates. We challenge ourselves to reinvent classics while honoring their roots.
Passion in Every Dish
Cooking isn't just our business — it's our calling. That passion is the secret ingredient in every recipe we create at Cafe Rio.
